Causes of Gastric Disorders
Some of the factors that are responsible for causing digestive problems are dietary habits, less or no physical work, lifestyle changes, a habit of overeating, having frequent meals, wrong sitting postures, incompatible food, seasonal changes, ingesting GM food, etc.
According to Ayurveda, gastric problems in the body occur as a result of an imbalance of the pitta or
This condition refers to the bowel movements that are infrequent and when stools are hard to pass. It is only a sign and not a disease by itself. Therefore, it is important to find the cause of constipation. The cause could be due to an improper diet, hormonal changes, sedentary lifestyle, stress, not drinking enough water, etc. all of these factors contribute to incomplete digestion of food. Symptoms include belching, pain the stomach, nausea, flatulence, lack of appetite, body heaviness, etc.
Diet and lifestyle changes are to be adapted to ease constipation. Improved intake of fibre (soluble and insoluble), fruits and vegetables are advised. It is recommended to have whole grains and nuts and avoid spicy, oily and junk foods. It is important to drink sufficient quantities of water.
Hyperacidity is simply an increased amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This helps to break down food particles into smaller pieces and a more easily digestible form. The cause of hyperacidity is because of the aggravation of pitta dosha in the body. This occurs because of eating food that are incompatible (milk and salt), excessively spicy/oily foods, smoking, excessive consumption of tea/coffee, excessive stress, untimely sleeping, etc.
The Ayurveda treatment for hyperacidity is aimed at taming the pitta element in the body. For this, cleansing herbs are used which help to clean the digestion channels. Diet and lifestyle changes are recommended to ease the digestive tract. It is also recommended that certain types of Pranayama such as Vajrasana, Shitali Pranayama, etc., are practised to help decrease hyperacidity.
Piles is a medical condition in which swollen veins obstruct the passage of stools, cause bleeding, cause prolapses or produce some kind of discharge. Some of the causes are constipation, excessive physical strain, non-vegetarian food, dehydration of the body, etc. Ayurveda treatment for piles differs on the basis of the different stages of piles.
In the initial stages, customized Ayurveda medicines are administered to improve the digestive function and to regularize the bowel movements. For a person suffering from an advanced stage of piles, detoxification is advised for cleansing. Customized medication and diet would help to ease piles in advanced stages. When there are bleeding and prolapse of the piles, Kshar Sutra therapy is advised. This requires a minimum amount of surgical invasion and reduces chances of its recurrence.
